| In 2001 Sri Lanka Cricket decided to build an International Cricket Stadium for a spectator capacity of 30,000 in the Dry Zone to host matches throughout the year. Surath Wickramasinghe Associates were selected after a competitive process to provide Multi-disciplinary Professional Services. A Master Plan was prepared for the 35 acres Site to give prominence to the Grandstand which is five floors in height. received an Excellence Award from the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects. The design was completed to satisfy the International Cricket Council requirements. The Security for the Players and Officials was a priority, the Grand Stand provided seating accommodation for over 1000 spectators and also included VIP areas for Dining , Seating, and for other ancillary facilities. The view from the higher levels, of the Cricket Field, and the Lake on one boundary, and the famous Dambulla Rock and Paddy Fields provided stunning panoramic views. The Project was completed in 167 days and received an Excellence Award from the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects. |
